The Ante

The first step in a game of seven card stud is the "ante". All players must place this small bet prior to any cards being dealt. It is normally a fraction of the lower limit on the table. Low limit tables often have no ante.

Each player is then dealt three cards, two face down (hole cards) and one face up, which is known as the "up card" or sometimes "the door". The player showing the lowest up card must make the first bet, known as the "bring-in" bet. In the event of equally low up cards shown by two or more players, the order is determied alphabetically by suit.

The Bring-in bet

The bring-in bet is a small bet slightly larger than the ante, and is often half the lower limit of the table you are playing. A round of betting follows with each player having the option to fold, call or raise to a full bet. Each raise is limited to the lower limit. In Seven Card Stud the limit for bets in the first roundis is the lower table limit.

(For example, at a $5/$10 table, the ante would normally be $0.50, the bring-in $2.50, and a full bet would be $5.)

As with Texas Hold'em , in each round there is a maximum of 1 bet and 3 raises. When betting stakes are equal across the table, a second up card is dealt, known as fourth street.

Fourth Street

The player with the highest two face up cards begins the next round of bettng . If the highest two cards are a pair, they have the option to bet at either the higher or the lower limit. If two players are tied, then the player with the highest suit starts the betting.

Players can fold, call or raise as per normal. If no bets are made then players also have the option to check .(If all players check, then play moves to the next round.) Once again, when betting stakes are equal, the next card is dealt.

Fifth Street

Remaining players are dealt another card face up. As in fourth street, the highest hand showing begins betting, but all bets are now at the higher limit. Players continue to either call, raise, fold, or check (with the same provisos as in Fourth Street), and when betting stakes are equal, the next card is dealt.

Sixth Street

Sixth Street follows the exact sequence as in Fifth Street.

Seventh Street

Players receive the final card (sometimes known as the "river") face down. The player who began the betting in Sixth Street, begins betting in this round. When betting has finished, the player who made the last raise or bet shows his five card hand. The highest ranking five card hand wins the pot.
